Quantum Key Distribution
We help you decide whether using particles of light to share secret keys makes sense for your most sensitive connections, and how to set it up.
What is quantum key distribution?
To encrypt a message, both sides need a shared secret key. Normally that key is agreed using maths.
Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) shares the key using tiny particles of light sent over fibre-optic cable or by satellite. Because of the laws of physics, anyone trying to eavesdrop disturbs those particles, and both sides can tell.
QKD needs special equipment and is best suited to a small number of very high-value links, such as between two data centres.
Imagine sending a letter sealed with a soap bubble. If anyone tries to peek, the bubble pops and you know instantly that someone has tampered with it.
Why this is worth your attention
Eavesdropping is detectable
Any attempt to intercept the key leaves a trace, so you know if a link has been compromised.
Security based on physics
Its protection comes from the laws of nature rather than hard maths problems, so faster computers don’t weaken it.
Not always the right tool
QKD is costly and has distance limits. Often quantum-safe software encryption is enough, and we will tell you when it is.
Four simple steps
-
01
Understand
We identify which of your connections truly need the highest level of protection.
-
02
Compare
We compare QKD with quantum-safe software encryption on cost, distance and practicality.
-
03
Design
If QKD fits, we plan the equipment, routes and suppliers in a vendor-neutral way.
-
04
Pilot
We support a small trial on a single link before any wider rollout.

Questions people often ask
Is QKD the same as post-quantum encryption? add
No. Post-quantum encryption is new software that runs on normal computers. QKD uses physical particles of light and special hardware. Many organisations use post-quantum encryption everywhere and QKD only on a few critical links.
Does QKD work over the internet? add
Not directly. It needs dedicated fibre or satellite links, and distances are limited without special relay equipment.
Do you sell QKD hardware? add
No. We are vendor-neutral and help you choose, so our advice is not tied to any product.
